Recently on a beautiful fall Sunday afternoon, I went with friends to look at houses they are considering to buy. We visited about 7 in that afternoon and I noticed that the way all the builders had built the decks was the same. I got home and told my wife how glad I was that she insisted our deck not only be built the way we envisioned but also incorporated some really cool detailed features that set it apart, even if everything else was the same. The one I recall I had a fit about has ended up being one of my favorites; the deck post caps.
It does help to be married to an interior design student who works in the industry as well. She just sees things that I don’t. She could see how much small inexpensive post caps would set the deck apart from not only the house but the fence as well. She also used the post caps to augment the look at the top and bottom of the stairs. Because we decided to go with natural cedar caps, they blended in with the deck’s décor beautifully. It has evolved into a year round outdoor living space and not just a place to grill outside.
